Students will work independently to answer a prompt projected on the board in their composition notebooks (minimum of 5 complete sentences). Whole Class: First, we'll start to read the story A Place to Call Home aloud as a class, stopping to answer questions on the guiding questions study guide. Independent: Students will take the Summit Assessment for English 8 (Essay structure). Students will then review the resources for essay structure and begin to organize their information for the essay, in outline form. Objective:
Students will work independently to respond to a prompt projected on the board in their composition notebooks (minimum of 5 complete sentences). Whole Class: Students will discuss the learning objective. Next, students will take notes on a brief PowerPoint presentation on CEEL and I'll model how to answer the prompt using CEEL, based on a sample excerpt. Next, I'll show a brief History Channel clip on September 11th to introduce our prompt of the day: "What is one way that September 11th changed immigration policy in the U.S.?" Then, I'll divide students into small groups, where they will read through a news article and cite and embed textual evidence, in paragraph form, to answer the prompt using CEEL, independently. Finally, we'll finish our reading of A Place to Call Home, stopping to answer questions on the guiding questions study guide. Independent: Students will write notes for a brief PowerPoint presentation. After discussing with their group members, students will cite and embed textual evidence, in paragraph form, to answer the prompt using CEEL. Students read along and answer questions on their study guide throughout the story. Collaborative: Students will read and discuss the article "Five Ways the Immigration System Changed After 9/11," filling out the CEEL outline individually. Next, students will take notes on a brief PowerPoint presentation on our next text A Place to Call Home. Then, in small groups, students will read through and try to answer as many questions as they can from a sample U.S. citizenship test. Next, we will discuss student reactions to such a test and how it relates to the idea of "What does it mean to be American?" Finally, we'll start to read the story A Place to Call Home aloud as a class, stopping to answer questions on the guiding questions study guide. Independent: Students will take the Unit 1 vocabulary test. Students will write notes for a brief PowerPoint presentation. Students read along and answer questions on their study guide throughout the story. Collaborative: Students will discuss and attempt to answer as many questions as possible on the U.S. citizenship test.
